The National Nature Park "Southern Ustyurt" was created by the Decree of the Government of Uzbekistan dated November 11, 2020 in the Kungrad district of the Republic of Karakalpakstan in the form of a state nature conservation institution. The total area is 1,447,143 hectares. The Ustyurt Plateau is an important habitat for more than 700 plant species and 300 vertebrate species, including the saiga antelope, whose numbers have declined by 90 percent over the past 20 years, according to research.
The unique ecosystem and remoteness of the area make many people interested in visiting these open, vast landscapes and has potential for the development of ecotourism.
The South Ustyurt National Nature Park borders Turkmenistan and Kazakhstan and could be expanded as a trans-boundary protected area.
