Göygöl National Park

Göygöl National Park (Azerbaijani: Göygöl Milli Parkı) is a park established on April 1, 2008, in the Göygöl district. The total area of ​​the park is 12,755 hectares (127.55 km²). The park was created on the basis of the Göygöl State Nature Reserve. The main goal of the creation is the preservation of natural complexes on the subalpine belts of the northern slopes of the Lesser Caucasus. The main protected objects are natural mountain complexes, forests, subalpine zones in the region of the northern slopes of the Lesser Caucasus, lakes Göygöl, Zeligöl, Maralgöl.

There are 8 lakes in the territory of the Göy-Göl Nature Reserve. The largest ones are Goygol, Zeligol, Maralgol, Garagol. The lakes are surrounded by mountains. In Goygol and other lakes of this region, a population of trout formed after their appearance in the 10th-12th centuries.

Göygöl is one of the largest lakes in Azerbaijan. The water of the lake is fresh and blue. “Göygöl” in Azerbaijani means “blue lake”.             The reserve forests are mainly oak, alder, and white acacia. The age of trees in oak forests reaches 90 years, in poplar forests - 60 years. The reserve also has wet poplar forests with lianas and elm-poplar forests with shrub undergrowth. Liana-poplar forests are characterized by high productivity. They contain giant trees up to 40 meters high and with a trunk diameter of up to 2.5 meters.

 

The reserve's flora consists of 420 species of plants, including 77 species of trees and shrubs.

The following predators live in the reserve: wolves, jackals, foxes, ermines, stone martens, jungle cats, forest cats, badgers, as well as 6 species of amphibians, 10 species of reptiles and 70 species of birds. The ungulates include wild boars and red deer.
